Sole Bruising

Causes
Sole bruising (sole haemorrhage) is caused by excess pressure on the sole of the hoof. This often occurs due to prolonged standing times, which may result from:
• Heat stress
• Insufficient cubicle space
• Uncomfortable beds
Unbalanced or overgrown claws
Excess standing increases pressure on the typical ulcer site of the claw.
⸻
Treatment
• Routine hoof trimming helps balance the claw and reduce pressure on the typical ulcer site, lowering the risk of bruising.
• If bruising is suspected, hoof testers can be used to assess sensitivity and determine the level of pain.
• If the cow shows pain response (e.g., flinching), a hoof block should be applied to the unaffected claw to transfer weight away from the affected claw and allow it to heal.
